Metacogniton--How Do You Learn Best?

You've probably experienced something that hasn't worked for you by now in either the coding in the wiki or writing the action script in Flash or trying to upload a file or download a video. It can really get frustrating. I know I've been there. I've given up a few times, but most of the time I keep trying until I get it. Or, sometimes, I wait until the next day, and almost magically it works the first time. I don't know why that is, maybe it's me or maybe it's the technology. Whatever the reason, I I just know that I am happy to get whatever I was trying to do to finally work.
In Game Design, you will have many experiences like this. One important thing to remember is that if you understand how you learn best, you will be one step closer to accomplishing your task. Some of us learn by doing. We are kinesthetic learners. Some of us learn by listening, and we are auditory learners. Others of us learn by seeing. We are visual learners. The real truth is most of us use a combination of these ways to learn but we are stronger in one or two of them. For example, I am A very strong visual learner and my next strongest area is auditory learning.
If you're not sure what kind of learner you are, think about when you get something new that has to be put together. What do you do? Do you read the directions? Do you look at the pictures? Or, do you get everything out and just figure it out or let someone show you how to do it? This can suggest what kind of learner you are?
When you are studying for a history test, how do you best retain the information? Do you rewrite notes? (kinesthetic) Do you read your notes and can you see those in your mind when you're taking the test? (visual) Do you think about what the teacher was talking about and hear that in your mind when you're taking the test? (auditory)
Knowing how you learn is called metacognition, and it is very important to your success as a life-long learner. The better you understand your thought processes, the better you are able to acquire new skills. Let's use this in gaining new skills as you delve deeper into Game Design! Comment on this post and let me know what kind of learner you are!

  1. That's pretty cool Mrs. White, I personally think I'm a bit of all that you listed. I learn really well from just about any form, which isn't that a good thing? I still can't really spell that well and my English grades in general suck but other than that I do pretty well.
